The words dry skin acne seem like a contradiction in terms. Acne is most often associated with oily skin, however it can affect any type of skin at any age. Healing your acne while moisturizing your dry skin seems like an impossible task. Most acne treatments are drying, while moisturizers for dry skin can often clog pores and cause more acne. Here are few basic tips that will help protect your dry skin as your acne heals.
1. Don’t Overdry Your Skin
Sounds logical, but it is very tempting to use drying cleansers and to apply more and more medication to your blemishes with the hope that your acne will clear up faster. However, too much medication and drying soaps can cause flaking, especially on skin that is already dry. This, in turn, makes your acne even more visible. Use a gentle soap-free cleanser and limit the amount of topical acne treatment medicine you use. If your skin starts to get too dry or itchy, stop the medication for a day or so until your skin calms down. Then reintroduce it by applying it less frequently, once a day or even every other day, until you achieve the right balance. Only apply it to those areas that have blemishes and avoid any other area on your face. Most people with dry skin and acne have to use a lower strength treatment. Speak to your dermatologist if your skin is getting flaky or irritated from any treatment. If you are using an over-the-counter treatment, look for something with a lower strength.
2. Use a Moisturizer for Normal to Dry Skin
If your skin is already dry, you need a stronger moisturizer than those made for oily skin. Stay away from ones made for oily skin or acne. These often contain additional ingredients for healing acne that can aggravate your dry skin. Instead, look for ones that are for normal or dry skin. However, you should still stick with oil-free moisturizers wherever possible. Read the ingredients carefully and look for moisturizers that are labeled as noncomedogenic. Not all oils will aggravate your acne, so if your oil-free moisturizer is not providing enough hydration, try something a little creamier and see how your skin reacts. Dry skin is particularly sensitive, so it makes sense to use products with natural ingredients wherever possible. Just test it out on a small patch of skin for a day or two first to make sure you do not get an allergic reaction. Also, be on the lookout for a large number of chemicals whose names might sound harmless, but which can aggravate your acne.
3. Steer Clear of Oil-Absorbing Makeup
Products that are described as specific makeup for acne are often formulated with some drying ingredients. You can still use oil-free regular mink fur lashes, but stay away from those described as “oil-absorbing” or “shine control”. It is also important to moisturize your skin first before putting on any foundation. Then experiment with different formulas to see which works best for you.
